About ITA...

About Capt. Guy...

Island Time Academy, is dedicated to your sailing and cruising enjoyment. By amassing needed and desired skills, sailing and cruising need not be uncomfortable or scary. We encourage couples to learn the same skills... though sometimes not together. We can use our excellent yacht or yours.

Our courses are detailed and cover the gamut from simple day trips, overnighters, extended cruising or living aboard. Safety is paramount, not just physical safety, but mental and emotional health as well (as it relates to cruising). Avoiding strife among crew is very important and begins with good crew management techniques.

Located in New Smyrna Beach, FL, we dock only 2.5 miles from the Atlantic via Ponce Inlet... you'll not spend hours getting to blue water. New Smyrna Beach FL is less than one hour from Orlando, between Daytona Beach and Cape Canaveral. There's lots to do here in our quiet beach town. map

You'll keep track of all sea time via a personal Logbook; your instructor will update your Skills as they develop.

Island Time Academy is not associated with any organization such as ASA or US Sailing; you will not receive any of their certifications but you will receive Our Certification and a detailed skills inventory; this will enable you to charter at most Caribbean, FL and Bahamas charter companies. We feel that the modern cruiser needs a fresh approach to the subject matter of sailing around coastal Florida, the Keys and Bahamas. You'll be able to handle a boat up to 50'+ and charter from the major operators. You will be given an individual log-book to track your learning and experiences. We do use textbooks from various sources; our favorite is good old Chapmans. Our courses are conducted aboard a boat as much as possible. s/v Island Time will be the primary vessel used.

Blue water, Inlets, great winds, tricky currents and tides all add to your experience with Island Time Academy.

Your host, Capt. Guy, has been around serious boats since a teenager. Sea Scouting got Guy into passage making including summers in Cuba aboard a 65' T-boat.

Guy is currently licensed as a Master, Coastal (up to 200 miles from shore) with a Towing endorsement. First licensed at 18yrs old (50Ton Master), Guy spent 8 years in the Coast Guard. Drifting away from boats for many years, he came back to sailing in 1983 aboard a 23' Lockley Newport in Chesapeake Bay. Moving up to a Hunter 28.5 and finally his current boat, s/v Island Time, a 1999 Beneteau Oceanis 352. Guy taught sailing and worked with Corporate Team building at Lord Nelson Charters. Guy has won his share of races and is looking forward to some blue-water events. Guy & Judy have vacationed/chartered most of the Caribbean and spent a few weeks sailing in Thailand. Guy and Judy spent the first quarter of 2002 cruising the Bahamas and Abacos.

Guaranteed Sailing Conditions

Free Sailing Time

We cannot guarantee the weather... some sailing may be done in light, heavy, rainy, foggy conditions. But if during your course you do not get to sail in the desired wind conditions, you'll be given a pass to come back any day the weather/wind meets the agreed upon condition. e.g. You may desire a heavy day during the "Heavy Sailing" course (20kts+). Check the weather and call for your make-up day.

Come and join us any Wednesday AM for free sailing (limit 6 current or ex-students only). Call by Tuesday 1600 to check on availability. We'll go out the inlet in company with other sailboats and observe sailing techniques and chase a few of them.

Course Topics include...

  • Basic Keel Sailing
    • We offer basic sailing skills on a larger boat... suitable for those with some dinghy or beach catamaran experience.
    • Rules of the Road, piloting, boat handling are covered.
  • Keelboat-Cruiser Sailing Skills
    • Some keelboat sailing experience required. You will become proficient with furling sails, reefing, anchoring, docking, man-overboard recovery, auxiliary propulsion. The goal is to enable you to use a boat with Diesel, wheel, galley, water systems, plumbing, etc. around your home waters. You will also become comfortable with using a boat under power, tight quarter maneuvering, docking, currents, etc. The Rules of the Road will be explored in greater depth.
  • Basic Coastal Cruising
    • Keelboat - Cruiser Course or demonstrable experience required. You will become proficient with course planning, fuel management, weather assessment, charts, plotting, radio usage (VHF, FRS & Cell), GPS, Radar.
  • Advanced Coastal Cruising
    • After Basic Coastal Cruising, you will become proficient AND comfortable planning a 2-3 day trip including charting a course, arranging for dockage, watch standing, meals afloat, etc. We'll over-night from our base to a port at least 35-60 miles away. We'll also get into handling a dinghy and outboard--towing, securing, using of a dink are fun skills.
  • Large Boat Systems
    • You need basic mechanical skills to operate any type of vessel away from home. We get into fuel, batteries, water systems, plumbing, winches, shore power, etc.
  • Bareboat Chartering
    • After you've mastered the skills aboard a local craft, you'll be ready to go to the Caribbean. We'll review the paperwork, documentation, etc. required to charter a boat from great companies like the Moorings, SunSail, etc.
  • Navigation Skills
    • Skills necessary to plan, plot and execute a cruise of many legs and days (even weeks). Planning is the key to an uneventful trip. You'll learn about charts, maps, tides and currents, GPS, Chartplotter, using a Computer, etc. We'll take another cut at the Rules of the Road.
    • Advanced Navigation including passage making.
    • Use of GPS & Radar in Navigation.
  • Advanced Cruising Topics
    • We'll work on your list of items, safety, foreign ports, basic repairs of rigging and hardware.
    • Week-long cruises to S. FL and the Bahamas.
    • Bareboat journeys to the BVI's and Caribbean.
  • Intracoastal Cruising
    • One of the great things about coastal cursing is if it get to rough or stormy or windy you can make good time using the amazing IntraCoastal Waterway (ICW) from New Jersey to the Texas-Mexico Border. But it is not a stroll in the park. Nav Aids are often difficult to follow, fast power boats, slow trawlers, fishing craft, large tow's, thin water, bridges, local laws, etc. can upset the relaxing flow of your vessel. We spend enough time on the ICW so that you're fairly comfortable and might enjoy the diverse beauty of this waterway.
  • Inlet Skills
    • One of the challenges of coastal cruising is getting back into a safe harbor. Some inlets are very hard to negotiate, some are filled with commercial vessels. You'll get plenty of practice with some of the toughest inlets on the east coast, Ponce, and St. Augustine and the easy Port Canaveral, locks and all. Here is what can happen when you miss an inlet.
  • Heavy Weather
    • No one goes looking for heavy weather, but it sometimes will find you. Rigging your boat for weather, how to keep off a lee shore, motoring to safety, etc. are reviewed and practiced.
  • Living on a Boat
    • If you're gonna go for an extend period, then you're living aboard... how long is extended, usually until the laundry needs done. Packing clothes, provisioning, mail, bill paying, etc. are facts of living aboard.
  • Introduction to Big Boat Racing
    • While most cruising couples do not aspire to racing, the skills learned are very important and include, trimming for that extra half-knot, pointing a tad higher, keeping the boat moving in any wind condition, when to reduce power, etc. Capt. Guy has several hundred races under his keel and loves to race cruising boats as opposed to special purpose race class boats.
  • Your boat
    • Need help with your boat preparation or selection? We have brokered many yachts and were a Beneteau Dealer and can help you outfit your ship of dreams. We are a dealer for several lines of boating gear and have commissioned many new yachts.

Just want a boat ride...

Perhaps all you want is an outing on the water, see our Cruises page at islandtimeacademy.

The above topics may be used in a course tailored to your needs.
